‘Shining’ at night for Cancer Research UK

Cancer Research UK have just announced “Shine” their newest fundraising event taking place on Saturday, 17th April 2010.

Shine is Cancer Research UK’s first night time marathon walk, taking place in the illuminated city of Manchester! The event will feature 5000 participants taking part in a “procession of light” which will pass through many of the cities famous landmarks – including Old Trafford and the Town Hall.

Shine is not just unique in the fact that its the first walking marathon organised by Cancer Research UK, it also give participants the option of selecting which specific area of Cancer Research they would like to see their fundraising efforts support. The research areas for participants to choose from include breast, lung, and prostate, amongst others (there are 12 research areas in total) and entrants also have the option of fundraising for research into all types of cancer.

As well as a choice over which area of Cancer Research they can support, Shine also gives participants the chanced to choose their distance. There are two routes available, a Half Marathon at 13.1 miles or the full marathon at 26.2 miles.

Clive Sanders, Senior Events Manager at Cancer Research UK has said that he hopes Shine’s supporters will

“embrace Shine with as much enthusiasm as they have our other fundraising events such as Race for Life and Run 10k. We would encourage everyone to enter and pledge to raise as much money as possible for vital research into cancer.”

With one in three of us diagnosed with cancer at some point in our lives the road is travelled by many, yet everyone’s cancer journey is unique to them, whether they are affected directly or through family and friends. While Shine is one event for thousands of people, participants can choose the length of their route and which cancer to fundraise for so that their Shine experience can be unique to them.” he says

Whilst not a full blown run, a walking marathon is definitely more hardcore than a simple “walk in the park” and training for this event is definitely worthwhile. If you’re a keen runner why not incorprate this into your existing training schedule as part of a wider training plan?

More information is available from https://shine.cancerresearchuk.org/. Registrations for Shine, Manchester 2010 started on 19th October 09 so what are you waiting for? The cost is £30 and the walk starts at 10pm on Saturday 17th April.

Pete Morton, our resident PT took place in this years event and achieved an impressive time of 1h:21m:16s, placing him within the top 2% of competitors at position 103 – now of course we are biased but that’s pretty rapid!

Quoted as “one of the best halves around” the Cardiff Half Marathon is a picturesque course which takes runners through the city past some of the city’s most well known landmarks such as the castle, the museum and the bay… but thats not why we love it. The best thing about the Cardiff 1/2 Marathon is that the course if flat and its fast – attracting runners from all over to compete and take part in this event.

The 2009 men’s race was won by 19 year old Simon Lawson, who matched the British under 20s Half Marathon record – Congratulations Simon! The women’s race was won by Genet Measso who completed the course in a staggering 1h:15m:01s.

The race, which is organised by Barnardo’s, one of the UK’s leading children’s charities is now into it’s 8th year and has been growing in popularity since its conception in 2003. You can register up to 15th September 2010 but the race does have an entrance cap and with 12,000 runners anticipated for 2010 it’s probably worth registering early to avoid disappointment.

So what are you waiting for? Why not register for the Cardiff Half Marathon 2010 today? You can even download a FREE Half Marathon Training programme from Leggit.co.uk to help you prepare for the event!

Hereford Half Marathon

Read our Review on the Hereford Half Marathon 2009…

“Sunday 17th May 2009 saw the 25th Anniversary of what is known as one of the tougher half marathons in the UK, the Hereford Half.

The 6th time I have run this race and have only known it to be bright and sunny on the day. So, on opening the curtains in my hotel room that morning to see grey skies and heavy showers, I was filled almost with a sense of doom and gloom that reflected the weather.

However, true to form, 15mins before the 11am start, the rain stopped and blue sky appeared above us. The record 500 runners looked collectively relieved.

The race started promptly at the leisure centre and after the initial climb up Holmer Road, we reached the first mile marker. I checked my watch. 6:03 for mile 1 – ouch that was fast. I settled into an average pace of just under 6.5minute miles. Even a stitch at 5miles couldn’t stop me as the course undulated through the country lanes and surrounding villages of Stretton Sugwas and Creddon Hill (known more famously for being a base for the SAS). I hit mile 10 in 1:03 and was flying. 12miles in 1:15 Then the killer blow. The finish saw us enter the racecourse and run the last 350metres on soft woodchippings, much like running on sand.

My legs were drained but as I saw the clock on the finish line I knew that a new personal best was mine. 1:22:04 and 10th out of 461 finishers. A smart medal and a meal of steak and chips was my reward for the hard yards. A huge thank you should go to St. Michael’s Hospice of Hereford for again organising such an enjoyable event. I’ll be back next year!”
